The only other tip I can think of has to do more with getting things done rather than video editing in particular. It helps me a lot.

Once you have shot your footage, don’t waste any time editing. It seems like the longer you wait between shooting and editing, the harder it is to finish the project.

Adding music and editing in accordance with the beat (not always on the beat- in, around, before, after etc.) helps give the piece flow, depth and emotion where and if necessary. Not everything needs music however the right music often enhances everything.

I especially love tip 13. Seriously, those cheesy transitions, never ever a good idea. However, I did bring back the star wipe for a short time in 2000 when I was linear editing (when linear editing had long gone out of fashion) 60 second StarTV promos. Ah, memories.

As for the bonus tip, here’s an idea, could we get your kids to transcribe for fun? Anyone’s kids? Always got to be thinking.
